Christmas and New Year opening times, be prepared.
With Christmas and New Year festivities all around us, make sure you know how to access services this holiday. Access to free condoms, contraception and Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) is likely to be limited during the Christmas and New Year period due to restricted opening hours. Use find services to find your local services and we recommend ringing ahead to check they will be open and that trained staff are available.
Across Hampshire pharmacies are able to provide free Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) if they are a member of the 'Just Ask' scheme. EHC from pharmacy is available for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex for all women even if under 16. If it has been longer than 72 hours contact your local sexual health clinic. Please click pharmacy opening times for a list of pharmacies in Hampshire that provide free EHC that have stated they will be open on at least one of the bank holidays (25th/26th December 2014 and 1st January 2015). The details are correct at the time published but are subject to change.
It is the trained pharmacist that is able to provide free EHC not the pharmacy so please ring ahead to check the trained pharmacist will be available. For a full list of pharmacies open on the bank holidays across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight visit Hampshire and Isle of Wight LPC website. There will be a charge for EHC if the trained pharmacist is not available.
You can also access free EHC from your family doctor (GP) and make an appointment to discuss your ongoing contraceptive needs.
It is important to access emergency contraception as soon as possible as it works better the sooner it is taken. If it has been over 72 hours since unprotected sex then contact a sexual health clinic that can provide either the coil or Ella One which is a pill that can be taken up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. Clinic opening times can be found on the letstalkaboutit website. Use the 'Clinic Changes' tab to find Christmas and New Year opening times or call 0300 300 2016
